Property details

A unique custom-built beach house located in a secluded and stunning Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Finished in July 2018 to a very high standard, with stunning views towards the cliffs and beaches of Covehithe, The Listening Station is a contemporary property designed to blend in with its natural surroundings.

As with its sister property, The Watch Room, it sleeps four in two spacious double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The central area of the property is a comfortable living / dining area opening out on to a decked terrace. With only a low-lying cliff-edge and a near-private beach separating you from the sea, sit outside and enjoy the changing light of Suffolk’s big skies and appreciate nature at its best.

The Listening Station is located on a track in a private estate on the site of a World War II listening station – a location once used by Royal Navy Wrens for listening out for German submarines. It is a mere 5-minute cycle ride or 15-minute walk on a private track from the charming seaside town of Southwold with its iconic beach huts, lighthouse and pier. It is also possible to drive this track into Southwold town.

With a beautiful, secluded beach on your doorstep, an easy walk or cycle into Southwold, lovely coastal walks and amazing birdlife just outside your windows, this really has to be the perfect place to appreciate all that Southwold has to offer whilst giving the peace and seclusion in which to really relax.

Surrounding local area

If you are able to tear yourself away from the stunning views at The Listening Station, it is a 15 minute walk to Southwold. Besides the numerous independent shops, the Pier and Lighthouse are worth exploring. Southwold is also the home of Adnams, the brewery and there are opportunities for brewery tours or to experience their gin making process. If you want to go further afield the foot ferry from the harbour will take you to Walberswick where younger visitors can try the delights of crabbing or walk along the beach.
RSPB Minsmere is a short drive south from The Listening Station. The reserve has a number of footpaths crossing it allowing you to experience a number of different habitats including coastal wetlands and heaths. The area south of Minsmere forms part of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are lots of beautiful walks to take in the views of the countryside with plenty of opportunities for bird and wildlife watching.
Somerleyton Hall, situated north of Southwold is a fine example of Victorian architecture with over 12 acres of gardens to explore and a large arboretum which has recently been opened up to make it more accessible. The other gardens worth exploring are at Helmingham Hall home to the Tollemache family. The formal gardens are sat within 400 acres of parkland home to herds of both red and fallow deer along with other wildlife.Whether you choose to stay in the peaceful surroundings of the Listening Station or explore the countryside further afield you will be sure to have a relaxing break.

Comfy and cosy.
Every thing works and the space has been well thought out with nice touches, including essential coffee machine! You can’t beat waking up to the uninterrupted view of the sea and wildlife, from a warm, comfy bed!

Idyllic and tranquil
We enjoyed a wonderful break staying at the listening Post. It is ideally situated 15 minutes walk from Southwold Pier but it feels like a remote hideaway with wonderful views across the sea and a vast beach for walking. We will definitely try and stay here again and have already recommended this to several friends and family members.

If you love big skies, the sound of the sea and walking on empty beaches this is for you. To "get away from it all" was heaven.

What a fantastic location overlooking the sea and surrounding countryside. The light and the skies are spectacular.
You are away from it all, but close to the wonderful town of Southwold and all its amenities.
The Listening Station was very comfortable for the four of us, not large but the layout is well thought out and it was well stocked with essentials. This included milk and a bottle of wine, tea, coffee, sugar, salt & pepper, cooking oil, kitchen roll, clingfilm, foil etc.
We cycled into town and enjoyed trips further afield down narrow quiet country lanes taking in the local brew en route.
You have a real holiday feel staying here and we will definitely be booking again for next year.

A wonderful property that provides peace and tranquillity looking out over the ever changing sea. We enjoyed laying in bed and watching the sunrise in the mornings. The property is luxurious and very well furnished. Easy walk along a track back into Southwold and all the delights of Adnams ales, food and shops. A perfect getaway and we will be back again next year.

We had a very relaxing week watching fantastic sunsets & sunrises living amongst nature and listening to the sound of the waves. A short walk down to a near private beach and a swim in the warm (yes warm) North Sea. An gentle walk into the bustling centre of Southwold to get provisions or eat at one of many eateries. Further afield there are many places to visit including a great day at Sutton Hoo. The Listensing Station has excellent facilities and the owners, Ann & Phil were on hand if needed. Simply put, a great place for a gentler type of holiday.
