The small village of Thorpeness is dominated by the Mere, which is popular all year round and bears witness to the village’s fantastical past. In 1910 Stuart Ogilvie bought the hamlet and set to transform it into a private fantasy holiday village. Today the village is just how Ogilvie envisaged it with pretty mock Tudor houses and the fairy-tale ‘House in the Clouds’
You can hire a rowing boat or kayak, take a picnic and row out to one of the many Peter-Pan themed islands, and discover Wendy's playhouse. Covering some 60 acres, with over 40 acres of water, the lake is no more than three feet deep, and so provides a very safe boating environment.
Regarded as one of the finest golf courses in Suffolk, Thorpeness is a classic British heathland designed by five-time Open Champion and legendary golf course architect James Braid. The par 70, 18-hole Championship-standard course is just a stone's throw from the sea on the Suffolk coast, and its challenging 6,421 yards will test golfers of all abilities.
Sitting right on the beach, with cafes and a pub, and surrounded by nature reserves and wonderful walks, there's interest for everyone in and around Thorpeness.
